On the Rooftop with Walker McGuire and Jon Langston

Both Ed and I had seen posted on Twitter and Facebook that Jon Langston and Walker McGuire were going to be at BMI on the Rooftop for a show on August 15th!  In doing some googling, I found that BMI had several concerts on their rooftop over the summer starting on May 23rd.  Ed started trying to find out how we could get in because everything said it was a VIP only event and appeared you had to know someone to invite you or win tickets off the radio.  Luckily, Ed knew someone that sent us the invitation.

Neither of us knew what to expect.  I kind of had in my mind what I thought it would be and whew, I was wrong.  We got there about 5:45 and found free parking right by BMI’s building.  We went in the front entrance where our names were on a list.  We took an elevator to the 6th floor.  When we walked outside, the rooftop was huge and had great views of downtown Nashville.

The sponsors for the event were George Dickel Whiskey, Sam Adams Beer, Yeti, Texas Roadhouse and Nash 103.3.  The event was open bar and free food.  We didn’t eat anything but Ed did sample the open bar.

They had a decent sized stage set up in the corner and we saw that it was going to be full band.  We had figured on acoustic sets.  At 6:20 Kelly, from Nash 103.3 Morning show Ty, Kelly and Chuck, came on stage to introduce Walker McGuire!!

Jordan Walker and Johnny McGuire (yes it’s two people, not one) came onstage and after a “How  ya’ll doing”? immediately started playing.  We had only seen these guys one other time, during CMAFest at Music City Gives Back and we really liked them.  It was great to see them again.

Their current single “Til Tomorrow” is in the top 40!  Yay!!!  Even though the radio station we listen to, SiriusXM The Highway either never played it or only played it briefly.  Apparently, Nash 103.3 plays it and plays Jon Langston so maybe we’ll have to just start listening to 103.3.

Walker McGuire sounds great together, it is easy to see they love what they are doing.  Jordan Walker never stopped smiling the entire time.  They introduced their band, they made jokes, they did one dance move, which they stopped mid song to make sure everyone was looking at their dance move.  They just had a lot of fun on stage which made all of the crowd have fun.

They did about 6 songs.  One of my favorites was a very funny song “What’s Her Name” about a trip to Mexico that Jordan says is a true story. They played a new song “Lost” that was written with Kristian Bush that sounds great and then they finished their set out with the current single “Til Tomorrow”.

About thirty minutes went by and Kelly was back on stage to introduce Jon Langston.  We had first seen Jon back in July 2015 when he opened for Cole Swindell at 4th Street live in Louisville, KY.  At that time we’d never even heard of him but we really liked him and thought he was a great opener for that show.  Over the last couple years we’ve heard more about him and bought some of his music and I’ve tried to see him like four other times and something always came up.  I had decided it just wasn’t meant for me to ever see him live again.  So when this show popped up and we were actually able to get tickets I was a bit scared that he or I one would fall off the rooftop.  But thankfully that didn’t happen and I was finally going to get to see him again.

“She’s my ride or Die.  All Eyes on Us” was the first song he did.  I love this song!  Jon sounded great as he rolled through his set list.  “Forever Girl”, “Cigarettes and Me”(which he said is one of his favorite songs he’s written), “Probably at a Bar” and then he did a medley of covers, “Real Good Man”, “Dirt on my Boots” (sounded better than Jon Pardi) and “Kiss My Country Ass”.

As the sun was setting over Nashville, Jon did his current single “Right Girl, Wrong Time” and it sounded incredible.  It may have taken me awhile to get to see him live again but it was worth the wait. Hopefully, it won’t be that long again.

If you haven’t heard Walker McGuire or Jon Langston, I suggest you get off your ass and go get their music.  I don’t think you will be disappointed and if you are, well…..there’s just something not quite right with you!

Check back with us for blogs next week after Ed and I take to the road and head to the Appalachian Fair to see Chris Lane and Eric Paslay on Monday night and Brett Young on Tuesday night!  Also check out our you tube channel at www.youtube.com/ourcountryconcerts for all of our videos we’ve posted from shows.
